East Chambers holds off Van Alstyne for semifinal win
SAN ANTONIO - Darius Guillory mistakenly wore his shorts backwards Thursday. It hindered him not in the least.
The senior had 15 points, five steals and five rebounds in East Chambers' 66-61 vcitory over Van Alstyne in the Aladome, which puts the Buccaneers one victory away from their first state title Saturday in the Alamodome.
"My teammates told me (about my shorts) when we went in for halftime, but I was like, 'It's too late now,' " Guillory said.
"We've been saying, 'Why not us?' all year," said East Chambers coach Todd Sutherland, who coached the Bucs to their only other state semifinal win 20 years ago in his first stint with the team.
East Chambers (34-6) will face Brownfield in Saturday's 10 a.m. Class 3A final.
The Bucs will have their hands full against the No. 1-ranked Cubs, led by Darius Kyle. The 6-foot-4 sophomore scored 22 points in the Cubs' 70-54 win over Aransas Pass in the other Class 3Asemifinal Thursday.
Brownfield forced Aransas Pass into 34 turnovers in their win.
"I don't think any team has an advantage at this point," Brownfield coach Dustin Faught said. "Coach Sutherland is a seasoned veteran at the state tournament, and I know he'll have his guys ready to go."
East Chambers led 47-45 early in the fourth quarter against Van Alstyne, with three of its four top scorers - Dylan Silcox, Antwann Anderson and Ethan Kahla - playing with four fouls and Guillory with three.
"They weren't coming out unless they fouled out," Sutherland said.
Guillory, Silcox and Anderson combined for 15 of the Bucs' 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Silcox finished with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting.
State semifinal action will continue Friday as No. 1 Silsbee (30-5) takes on Levelland (25-11) for a spot in Saturday's Class 4A state final.
